About Poppy

Poppy Mercer is a horticulturalist and plantswoman, earth dowser and garden designer with extensive landscape installation experience.

Poppy is the daughter of the artist, the late Laurence Mercer, and the sister of practicing herbalist Shelly Staple. Her appreciation of the English landscape, love of nature and sense of form and colour were encouraged from the earliest years by her father, who was a passionate naturalist and gardener.

This influence led her to become an early campaigner for animal welfare and conservation in the seventies, whilst experimenting with self sufficiency methods and ethical living models.

Following a spell of community living in Suffolk, Poppy chose a career in horticulture and served a four year apprenticeship in the Royal Parks whilst studying Zen Buddhism with her master the late John Garrie Roshi.

During this time Poppy discovered that specific aspects of her work with John Garrie complemented her horticultural practice, and has formed the basis of all her work todate, which she currently describes as living and gardening with a light hand and a green spirit.

For the last 15 years she has been the hands on manager of her own garden design and install company, adding management and building experience to her portfolio of skills.

Her new company, launched this year along with this website is aimed specifically for likeminded clients commited to the green spirited approach to life and for their to be as much acknowledgement and value placed upon the magical as the practical.

Poppy's favourite activity these days is running a large organic produce allotment and a meditation garden in Highgate.
