estate management

On this page we discuss management issues in more detail, and feature a long term management project that we have undertaken.

1. Overview

Large gardens need a well- thought out management plan to keep them running efficiently and looking beautiful.

Our management plans always include establishing an effective infrastructure for things like waste management and recycling, equipment maintenance and bulk material supply and storage. We believe this to be essential for the efficiency and success of a garden.

A professional survey and scale drawn plan of the garden is useful in many ways. Apart from providing an accurate blueprint for design schematics, it provides a basis for
managed maintenance, staged development strategies, planting records and a universal communication document.

Soil and micro climate surveys also need to be done.

There is usually a marked degree of variance in soil type, soil structure, aspect and micro climate within any garden. This impacts directly on plant choice, maintenance practice, long and short term land management and any potential proposals.

This garden is set beside a wide stretch of the Thames and as such is prone to increased wind chill and lower winter temperatures. There is also the possibility of future flooding on the lower lawns if there is a rise in water levels. Canada Geese can make a mess of the grass here, but don't seem inclined to move into the main gardens.

A notable feature is the presence of massive plane trees that cast a timeless spell along with large areas of dappled shade and autumn leaves. They are a priceless asset.
The trees need ongoing monitoring and management, and their vast root areas protected from damage by pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Any future garden works will need to take all these factors into account.

Gardens should complement a house.

Here they are to be developed to harmonise with the Arts and Crafts style of the house.

Some older plantings have become valuable features.....

Some areas are completely under- developed and present a blank canvas....
